Bako National Park with a wonderful forest, abundant wildlife, plenty of jungle streams, some impressive waterfalls, lots of interesting plant life, numerous hiking trails, some beautiful beaches and all this only 37 km Sarawak's capital, Kuching.

The park has been a protected area since 1957, so the animals have become accustomed to human visitors and are less shy than their remote jungle cousins​​. Visitors, especially those who stay overnight will have countless opportunities to observe and photograph various types of wildlife.

Bako Headquarters in Telok Assam comprises the administrative and information complexes, canteen and sundry shop, accommodation, room service and boathouse. Boardwalks are constructed to link all these buildings, which are otherwise separated by mangroves and peatlands. Visitors are, therefore, almost guaranteed an unforgettable encounter with the Proboscis Monkey just walking down the catwalks. The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to September. It is advisable not to go there during the months of October to March as the sea gets rough, due to the monsoons and access to the park may not be possible.

Telok Assam, the area around the park office is a great place to see wildlife. Long-tailed macaques, silver leaf monkeys, common lizards, plantain squirrel, bearded pigs and mouse deer are all found here. Telok Paku trail takes about an hour and passes through cliff forest before reaching the beach-small isolated. Proboscis monkeys are often seen during seen during early morning or at dusk.

The interior of the park can only be explored on foot. Staying in or near marked trails is highly recommended. Boardwalks and stairs are installed to help with some of the most difficult sections.

Similar small vessels that take you to and from the park waiting on the beaches at peak times of the day and you can hire to take you to other beach destinations. A boat pickup can also be arranged to help facilitate the return journey of some of the longest trails in the park ending at the beaches. Pulau Lakei, some distance from the coast, only accessible by boat.

Park visitors should ensure that they carry large amounts of water with them; trekking in subtropical rainforest is thirsty. The cafe has a variety of beverages, including beer and soft drinks. There are bungalows for rent at the park headquarters. A stay of a night or two is highly recommended to experience the diversity of Bako, although accommodation can be charged and may have some mold growing on the ceilings, and an expensive housing is totally absent. The city of Kuching offers a much wider range of accommodation and luxury of air conditioning, if you are interested in Bako visit just for a day trip.

Bako National Park is only 37 km from the city of Kuching, capital of Sarawak. Getting to Kuching is easy with direct international flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Jakarta, Osaka-Kansai, Seoul-Incheon, Tokyo-Haneda, and connections to most major cities in Malaysia like Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, and Johor Bahru
